What happens to your Facebook account when you pass away?

Now that Facebook is so prevalent, the question presents: what happens to my social media when I pass away? The answer is, it depends on the platform.


For example, Facebook’s requirements for deactivation include completing a form which you can find here.  Facebook also allows the person’s page to be changed into a memorial page if requested by an immediate family member.  


Facebook has an estate planning tool as well.  Specifically, it allows you to designate a “legacy contact.”  You can find instructions on how to designate your contact here. In the event of your passing, this person can post to your page and accept friend requests.
